Edinburgh’s Dominion Cinema: Where Comfort Meets Luxury

We recently were fortunate to visit Dominion Cinema here in Edinburgh for a viewing of Top Gun: Maverick So, join us we get a taste of luxury and comfort at an iconic Edinburgh cinema.

Dominion Cinema- a simple, but classic Art Deco building- is located in Morningside, Edinburgh. It is a family-run business that has been around since 1938. Alongside locals, famous actors such as Cary Grant, Sigourney Weaver, Jude Law, and Dame Judi Dench have visited over the years.

However, we are quite lucky that this historic cinema is still open as it struggled during the COVID pandemic. Fortunately, with the support of the local community, Dominion Cinema was able to stay in business and hopefully they have ‘turned the corner’ and the situation will keep improving for them.

We were able to do the Dominion Cinema's ‘First-Class’ service which harkens back to a time of movie-going experience that no longer exists at the chain cinemas. We attended a screening of Top Gun: Maverick that was to begin at 8:00pm. However, with the First-Class service, you can arrive as early as 7:00pm. As you walk through the entrance, you step onto the red carpet where you are greeted by friendly staff who direct you where to go. In our case, there was a dedicated entrance for First-Class and an usher on hand who guided us to our seat.

But, let me say, ‘seat’ is an understatement because we had a love seat recliner that embodied true comfort. Once seated, we had until 7:45pm to order food service from Bondi’s Bar. While we perused the menu on our phones (you order via QR code), we snacked on the complimentary Pringles and chocolates.

As part of the First-Class service, you get your food and drinks brought directly to your seat served in and on real dishes! We got the sharing nachos, Bavarian hot dogs (served on a tasty baguette bun), olives, and soft drinks. Everything was delicious, but we were especially impressed with the nachos as they had real cheddar cheese melted over the tortilla chips and three dipping sauces (salsa, sour cream, and guacamole). For those looking for something a little stronger than soft drinks, there is quite an assortment of alcoholic drinks from which to choose.

Regarding the movie experience (don’t worry this will be a spoiler-free post), it started promptly at 8:00pm with no commercials or trailers- such a wonderful feature! Top Gun: Maverick was an excellent movie, and the experience was taken to the next level at Dominion Cinema thanks to a top-notch Dolby-Digital sound system that made me feel as if I was flying along with Maverick (although, thank goodness this wasn’t a real flying experience as my very real susceptibility to motion sickness would have ruined it😂).

Well, that’s going to do it for now. We’ve been truly spoilt by Dominion Cinema’s luxury and comfort and it’s hard to imagine experiencing films any other way now. As we run our own-family run business, we are always happy to support others as well. Therefore, we are pleased to highly recommend Dominion Cinema in Edinburgh. While our first-class experience was a birthday gift, we hope to go back soon.

What is important to mention is that the cost of the First-Class service is not much more than basic chain cinema fees and is even the same as some of them. Therefore, you really get amazing quality of service for prices that are not exorbitant. Especially as the comfort level is out of this world and their recliners are the most comfortable ones I have ever experienced at any cinema! In fact, I joked that I would like to have one of their love seat recliners in our house. Be sure to head over to their website for more information on prices and showtimes.
